The Question We Answer First

That order matters. Most of the trade sells slabs, so the honest repair answer tends to get skipped. We would rather spend an afternoon on a chip fill and keep the customer than talk somebody into a kitchen they did not need.

How We Decide

Three things settle it. Where the damage sits, what caused it, and whether the surface under the stone is still flat and still supporting it.

A chip on a straight edge is missing material in a place that carries nothing. It gets filled with color-matched resin, cured, leveled and polished back into the profile, and in a patterned granite it becomes genuinely hard to find. A crack running out of a sink cutout is a different animal. That corner is the most stressed point in the whole run, and a crack there is usually telling you something moved underneath.

So we check the cabinet run with a level before we touch the stone. In a lot of Riverside tract housing on slab foundations, a settled slab has pulled a cabinet out of true, and the countertop is simply reporting it. Repair the stone and ignore that, and the same crack or the same open seam is back inside a year.

When We Say Replace

We say it when a cutout has cracked through in more than one direction, when a miter has delaminated along its length, when the substrate is failing, or when the cost of doing the repair properly closes in on the cost of new stone for that one piece. In that case we template and replace that piece, not the whole kitchen, and we are straight with you beforehand about how well a new slab will match an older run. Often it will not match perfectly, and that is worth knowing before the order goes in.
